Chilly Fort Myers weather challenges outdoor dining, restaurants adapt

As temperatures plummet in downtown Fort Myers, outdoor dining has become a chilly affair. Many restaurants are pulling out all the stops to keep guests warm, from heaters to blankets.

"It's freezing as far as I'm concerned," said Julie Corazza, a resident of LaBelle.

Corazza emphasized that the wind is making the situation worse.

On Thursday night, the wind chill took center stage, with temperatures across Southwest Florida dropping into the 30s. The wind chill made it feel about five degrees colder, a rarity for Floridians.

"Today, it's freezing," Corazza added.

As the temperatures falls, outdoor dining options are dwindling.

"We're trying to accommodate and keep as many guests indoors we can," said Emily Hamburgers, the general manager of Sip & Sizzle.

At Sip & Sizzle, flexibility is essential.

"We have heaters to keep them warm," Hamburgers said. "Think there's even some blankets left for New Year's. We can get them to bundle up."

Heather Mazzotta, a tourist from Philadelphia, shared her perspective on the weather.

"We feel great because at home, it's 30 degrees, so this is still very warm for us right now, and the heater is doing a great job," said Mazzotta.

Locals, however, have their own methods for staying cozy.

"I'm gonna have a coffee with some Baileys," Corazza said. "I mean, that warm you right up."

Whether you're a local seeking extra warmth or a visitor from up north, restaurants in Fort Myers are doing their best to keep diners comfortable this weekend.
