Cold weather doesn't stop Cape Coral residents from outdoor activities

CAPE CORAL, Fla. —

As cold weather arrives on the Gulf Coast, residents of Cape Coral are continuing with their plans, whether it be sitting by a fire pit or dining inside, with some even playing sports outside in the low temperatures.

"Way too cold. Definitely way too cold," said Ashton Laverio.

Despite the dropping temperatures, soccer and football practices did not take a timeout at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.

Tajivon Hinnant said, "I just got my hoodie in my backpack. I made sure to put that on. I have been, like, stepping side to side, making sure to always keep some movement."

Both players and parents were seen wearing all kinds of layers, including blankets and beanies. Across the Gulf Coast, people are also covering tropical plants to protect them from the chill.

"I moved down here for the heat. So the cold's got to go away," said Katie Austin, who chose to sit inside with her friends downtown, where heaters were turned on to keep diners warm.

Restaurants and bars along Cape Coral Parkway barely had anyone out in the cold.

"We have our heat set for tonight. So the heat is going to come on tonight, and it only comes on once a year," Austin said.

As the cold weather stays for the night, residents are reminded to turn off portable space heaters or any fire sources before going to bed.
