Collier County braces for potentially severe early brush fire season

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. —

With drought conditions continuing across parts of Collier County, local agencies are preparing for what could be a severe brush fire season.

"A big part of keeping you safe during this early brush fire season is collaboration between agencies," said Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk. "We clearly have been advised by the fire service that the brush fire season could be its most severe that we’ve ever had. And we are prepared for that."

Parts of Collier County are already experiencing severe drought, and local officials say fires can start and spread quickly. A lack of hurricanes in 2025, storms that normally help reduce wildfire risk, adds to the concern.

"This year, conditions have been drier than normal, and forecasts indicate that they are expected to continue through March," said Jesse Lavender with the Florida Forest Service.

To get ahead of the season, agencies are staging resources early, including brush trucks, dozers, drones, helicopters, and Bambi buckets to drop water from the air.

Last year alone, the CCSO aviation unit dropped more than 50,000 gallons of water on wildfires, including incidents in the Picayune Strand State Forest. The Florida Forest Service has expanded its use of drone ignition technology, allowing crews to work more efficiently while using fewer personnel.

"Teamwork is key," said Chris Wolfe, Greater Naples Fire Rescue District Chief. "Fire, law enforcement, and forest service agencies train and respond together, making it possible to get ahead of fires before they spread."

Officials urge residents to take proactive steps to reduce fire risk:

• Clear debris, leaves, and twigs from yards and gutters
• Follow local burn restrictions
• Be vigilant and prepared, similar to hurricane season
• Call 911 immediately if you see smoke and aren’t sure whether it’s a prescribed burn

"Everyone, be vigilant. Take responsibility for your property, be prepared, and know your plan," Wolfe said. "Even small steps can prevent a fire from spreading to your home or your neighbor’s."

By combining advanced equipment, interagency collaboration, and public awareness, Collier County officials hope to keep residents, homes, and natural resources safe during this early and potentially dangerous brush fire season.
