Leaders with the Lee County Metropolitan Planning Organization are set to discuss the potential for a 1% increase in local sales tax to fund roadway projects. If it moves forward, the decision would ultimately be left up to voters.
Don Scott, executive director of the Lee County Metropolitan Planning Organization, said the additional sales tax revenue would help expedite roadway projects slated for years down the road or support those that currently appear to have insufficient funding through 2050. This proposal comes after leaders and residents expressed concerns about the need for infrastructure improvements.
For example, if a $100 item is purchased, the current sales tax is $6.50, and if the proposal is approved, the tax would increase to $7.50.
"This is hard because in order to be sold that I would need to have a pretty confident look at what people are looking to use with that money," said Jonathan Hill, a Lee County voter. "I would vote no."
"It would hurt the local businesses to raise the tax again," Carol Ann Levi, another voter, said. "I would vote no."
Currently, the proposal is set to be discussed by leaders with the Metropolitan Planning Organization on Jan. 23. If it progresses, it will be further discussed by Lee County leaders to determine if it will be placed on the ballot.
