Naples community celebrates Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy with parade

NAPLES, Fla. —

If Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were still alive today, he would be 97 years old, and his legacy of fighting for civil rights continues to inspire people in Naples, where the community gathered to celebrate with a parade and festivities.

This year marks 58 years since King's assassination, yet his impact remains strong. Jaden Jackreece from Golden Gate Titans Basketball said, "There's a lot of bad stuff that happens, and it's just good to see everybody from different colors communities just come around and just celebrate one personally and then just turn into a very good culture."

Despite the chilly morning, crowds lined up for the parade along 5th Ave S. Joel Pittelman from Naples remarked, "I think this is one of the biggest turnouts they've had."

The parade concluded at Cambier Park, where the celebration of King's ideals continued for hours. Daniel Melvin, a member of the Collier County NAACP, expressed his satisfaction with the large turnout, saying, "That's what his dream was about: to become a melting pot. Everybody working together and getting along, learning from one another and growing together."

Jackreece shared his joy in seeing the community come together, saying, "My favorite part today was seeing different people with the different shirts, different communities coming together, hugging, cheering, laughing, clapping, singing."
