Lee County commissioners expected to implement local state of emergency and burn ban

LEE COUNTY, Fla. —

Lee County continues to be under a drought during the cooler season, and to help prevent wildfires from happening, county leaders are expected to implement a local state of emergency and a burn ban.

Residents will be prohibited from burning anything outside, including bonfires, and burning yard debris or anything else that could get out of control with one spark.

There have been two brush fires in Lee County already in the new year.

One brush fire broke out in Alva and another in St. James City.

The following counties and cities currently under a burn ban are Collier, Hendry, Charlotte, Desoto, Glades, Cape Coral and Punta Gorda.

Lee County may be added to the list if county commissioners approve the ban.

The burn ban would take effect immediately after the resolution is signed.

It's expected to be in effect for 30 days, but that could be longer if conditions do not improve.

The Lee County Board of Commissioners meeting will take place Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 9:30 a.m.
