Lehigh Acres neighbors concerned over boats dumped on roads

LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. — Two boats were mysteriously dumped just streets apart in Lehigh Acres, leaving neighbors puzzled and concerned. Deputies from the Lee County Sheriff's Office say they are working with county officials to address the dumped boats.

One of the boats was found partially blocking the road near Palmetto Street and West 18th Street. The Sheriff's Office confirmed that the boat was not reported stolen but was removed because it obstructed the road.

“What they're doing there with no trailer, nothing, just leaving 'em on the road. That's crazy,” said Ronald Jenkinson, a Lehigh Acres neighbor.

A second boat was discovered just a few roads away. Although this boat was off the road, neighbors expressed concern that children might climb on it, posing safety risks.

“There's some metal that gets cut on, windshield, whatever. That's not safe for the kids, or if they're sitting on there, they could also shift and maybe pin somebody,” said Jenkinson.

Jenkinson highlighted that illegal dumping is a recurring issue in the area, with tires and construction debris frequently appearing along roads and wooded areas.

“It's easier for them to pull up in the middle of the night, a section of wooded area and just dump it, you know, it's easier than taking it to the dump,” he said.

To combat the issue, Jenkinson started bringing trash bags on walks and bike rides, often turning the activity into a community service lesson for his granddaughter.

“We just pick a couple of sections of road and then pick up trash, and we usually end up. Bringing a bag or two back,” he said.

Jenkinson expressed relief that deputies are taking action to remove the dumped boats due to the dangers they pose to children. The Sheriff's Office encourages anyone who witnesses illegal dumping to report it immediately.
