National blood shortage due to nationwide flu outbreak prompts local donation needs

FLORIDA, (WINK)—The American Red Cross declared a severe blood shortage after the national supply fell 35% in the past month. 

A nationwide flu outbreak and harsh winter weather have led to cancelled drives and uncollected donations.

"This time of year is always challenging for blood collection — but right now, the perfect storm of a long holiday season, record flu activity, and winter weather are all impeding donation efforts," said Dr. Courtney Lawrence, executive medical director for the Red Cross.

The Red Cross reported the shortage is critical for blood types O, A negative, and B harmful, which are essential for trauma victims and patients with severe medical conditions. 

WINK News reached out to both Lee Health and NCH about flu cases in Southwest Florida. 

Lee Health reported nearly 2,300 cases. NCH has seen 501.

Community Blood Center, an affiliate of Naples Comprehensive Health (NCH), has limited supplies of O- and A- blood and low supplies of type A+. Platelet donors of any blood type are also needed to offset the continued use by area patients. 

The next Southwest Florida blood drives held by NCH will occur on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at Sembler Plaza, 6434 Naples Boulevard in Naples, near the Vitamin Shoppe.
