Nonprofit organization recognized for its decade-long support to grieving families

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Valerie's House, a nonprofit organization in Fort Myers, celebrated a significant milestone as it marked 10 years of supporting grieving children, teens, and families in Southwest Florida.

The City of Fort Myers councilmembers and Lee County commissioners recognized the organization's impact on the community, highlighting its dedication to providing a safe haven for those coping with loss.

Valerie's House offers a space where grieving individuals can feel seen and heard. Through therapy, arts and crafts, and sports, the organization helps thousands of kids express themselves after losing a loved one.

Angela Melvin founded Valerie's House in honor of her mother, who died in a car crash in Fort Myers in 1987.

"Every day I pull up to work, and I look at that sign that says my mom's name, and I'm really proud of what we've accomplished here. It's been a lot of work, but I couldn't be more grateful for the community believing in this," said Melvin.

Molly Flynn, a teen ambassador assistant at Valerie's House, shared her personal experience with the organization.

"I lost my father in my junior year of high school," said Flynn. "I was terrified to come on my first night. I waited months before I even showed up, and I'm so glad I did. I do not know where I would be without this place."

Valerie's House remains committed to its mission, continuing to offer support and solace to those navigating the arduous journey of grief in Southwest Florida.
