Florida to limit junk food purchases for food stamp users

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

Florida will soon implement restrictions on food stamp users, preventing them from purchasing certain junk foods as part of an effort to encourage healthier eating habits.

Currently, five states have already started enforcing similar restrictions, and Florida is among 13 states planning to implement these changes this year. Despite this, more than 60% of states still allow EBT users to buy any food items they choose.

State officials have announced that items such as soda, energy drinks, candy, and ultra-processed prepared desserts will be off-limits for purchase with food stamps. Brenda Erickson expressed support for the move, saying, "I think they should. I think it's too much sugar, too much oil nowadays, seed oils, they're not good for you."

However, not everyone agrees with the restrictions. James, a regular consumer of energy drinks, said, "I don't believe in that at all."

The state hopes these changes will encourage people to buy more fruits and vegetables, although Akil Chalfani, from Fort Myers, noted that fresh food is often more expensive. "Long-term eating organic vegetables, they are more expensive, but they're also better for you," Chalfani said.

The Community Cooperative in Fort Myers is working to address this issue by growing its own organic vegetables to provide to those in need.

"When clients come here to shop for emergency groceries, they have that ability to access fresh vegetables and produce right away," said Stefani Ink-Edwards, director of the Community Cooperative.

Despite the focus on healthier options, Ink-Edwards acknowledged the community's fondness for sweets, saying, "I know we have a lot of sweet tooth's here in SWFL. People enjoy that, and it's OK thing."

The restrictions will begin on April 20, and grocery stores will be responsible for enforcing these new rules on SNAP recipients.
