In Punta Gorda, cuddling Highland Minis is the new way to de-stress

If you’re feeling stressed, tired, or simply in the mood to unwind with some furry friends, Motor City Mini Acres may be just the kind of peaceful escape you’re looking for.

Motor City Mini Acres offers visitors a chance to engage with gentle farm animals — including miniature cows, donkeys, goats and more in a relaxed, family-friendly setting.

Unlike a traditional petting zoo, this experience is built around up-close interactions, cuddle sessions and events designed to bring people and animals together in meaningful ways.

Founder Beverly Ritchie started Motor City Mini Acres in the fall of 2025 after falling in love with mini cows during a trip to a farm in Michigan.

“I was supposed to be working on the farm, but I just couldn’t get enough of these animals,” Ritchie said.

Her affection for miniature animals inspired her to bring the concept south, and her Michigan background is even reflected in the farm’s name, a nod to Detroit’s “Motor City.”

Unlike full-sized cattle, the miniature Highland cows at the farm won’t grow much larger than they are now, making them especially suitable for close human interaction.

Ritchie says she sourced many of the animals as calves from across Florida, raising them to be friendly and people-oriented.

“They’re so used to being near people now, they’re just like dogs,” she said.

Motor City Mini Acres isn’t just about strolling through a field with animals. The farm says these animals are like their family. They also host a variety of events, parties and seasonal experiences designed to make every visit memorable.

For Valentine’s Day, the farm’s featured event is “Kiss a Cow." It's an opportunity for visitors decked out in Valentine’s attire to take photos, mingle with the animals, and even get a kiss from a fluffier farm friend.

Ritchie says the farm also regularly welcomes school groups. Girl Scout troops. Past seasonal activities have included welcoming Santa and holiday photo ops.

Helping run the farm is Beverly’s husband, Chris Ritchie, who grew up around animals and brings hands-on farming experience to the operation.

“We put in a lot of work behind the scenes,” he said, “but seeing people meet farm animals for the first time, especially kids, makes the effort worth it.”

Beverly says one of the most rewarding parts of the work is watching children, especially those who are on the spectrum or non-verbal communication styles, respond to the animals.

“They open up a lot with the animals,” she said. “We make sure they have more time with the animals, depending on their needs. It’s very special and sweet to see.”

Visits to Motor City Mini Acres are by appointment only, with options for private cuddle sessions and booked group experiences throughout the year.

Guests can expect a relaxed farm atmosphere, hands-on time with friendly miniature animals, photo opportunities and for many just the kind of peaceful break from everyday stress that only soft noses and warm snuggles can provide.
