Lee County deputies arrest man accused of DUI, attempting to leave scene of crash on foot

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

A man was arrested in Fort Myers on Thursday after being accused of DUI, rear-ending a car and trying to run away from the scene of the crash.

According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to the scene of a crash at the intersection of McGregor Boulevard and Summerlin Road at around 1:06 p.m. Two vehicles, a Nissan Pathfinder and a Hyundai Elantra, were involved.

Deputies say that Richard Childs, 25, was standing outside of the Hyundai, which they say rear-ended the Nissan.

Deputies on scene say that Childs had alcohol on his breath and appeared to be intoxicated. They add that he then attempted to leave the scene of the crash, but he fell due to being unsteady on his feet.

LCSO says that Childs was detained for his safety and that he resisted attempts to arrest him and refused a breathalyzer test. Deputies add that Childs yelled several slurs at them.

After a hospital stay, Childs was released into police custody and charged with a DUI, DUI with damage to property, hit and run, refusal to submit to DUI testing and resisting an officer without violence.
