Powerful winter storm impacts millions across the U.S.; Here’s what you need to know

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA — A powerful winter storm is sweeping across much of the United States this weekend, stretching from New Mexico all the way to New England. Winter weather watches and warnings now span more than 2,000 miles across the country.

Freezing rain, sleet, snow, and ice are expected to create dangerous travel conditions through Saturday and Sunday.

Weather Authority Meteorologist Lauren Kreidler warns that even a small amount of ice can be devastating. “Just one inch of ice can weigh about 750 pounds,” she says — enough to snap tree limbs and bring down power lines.

Behind the storm, temperatures will remain cold, increasing the risk of refreezing on roadways in the days that follow.

The impacts are already being felt in the skies. As of Saturday morning, FlightAware reports nearly 10,000 flight cancellations nationwide. That includes ripple effects for Southwest Florida, as delays and cancellations pile up at major airport hubs hit by the storm.

Locally, cooler air will push south late Sunday into Monday, bringing a chance for isolated showers to start the week. By Tuesday morning, lows will dip into the 40s, with afternoon highs struggling to reach the mid-60s through the rest of the week.
