Lehigh Acres residents call for caution at intersections amid frequent crashes

LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. —

Residents in Lehigh Acres are urging drivers to slow down and stop at intersections, as frequent stop-sign violations are causing accidents and raising concerns about potential injuries.

"You can be the best driver in the world, and it's the other people you have to watch out for," said Corey Schott, whose dashcam captured a car rolling through a stop sign and causing a crash with an SUV on Sunday night. Schott recounted a similar incident, saying, "I was driving on 82 and going right past the intersection of Blackstone Drive, where the 7-Eleven is. And, the lady just rolled right through a stop sign, T-boned the side of my car, and totaled my car. And, yeah, that was a tough one."

Walter Salazar, a resident since 2008, noted the increasing frequency of such incidents as the area grows busier.

"It's been happening way too often, and accidents occur there all the time," he said. Salazar suggested that a traffic light might be necessary, stating, "Eventually what's going to need to happen is they're gonna have to install, like, some kind of traffic light cause the stop signs just aren’t doing it."

Schott echoed the sentiment, observing, "It's only becoming worse. I feel like over the years I've lived here, it's becoming more and more frequent."

At the intersection of Homestead and Jaguar, about a mile from Bell and Jaguar, a four-way stop with double stop signs on each side was recently added, according to residents.
