Fort Myers man accused of grabbing officer's gun during nightclub arrest

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

Two men were arrested after an altercation outside a club in Fort Myers. One was accused of reaching for an officer's gun.

According to the Fort Myers Police Department, officers responded to multiple reported disturbances at a club on Palm Beach Boulevard around 2 a.m. Sunday.

Once on the scene, officers saw two men near a white sedan who looked to be in an altercation. One of the men, identified as Alex Daniel Corona Contreras, 28, displayed clear signs of intoxication, the FMPD said.

Corona Contrereas was also exhibiting an angry demeanor toward the other man, identified as Ever Saul Sanchez Soto, 31, who was sitting in the front passenger seat of the white sedan, the FMPD said.

Corona Contreras then opened the passenger door of the sedan with so much force that it bent backward as he tried to reach for Sanchez Soto, the FMPD said.

Officers immediately attempted to detain Corona Contreras, putting him in wrist restraints. While the officers were distracted with Corona Contreras, Sanchez Soto got out of the car and grabbed one of the officer's guns, which was securely holstered to his hip, the FMPD said. The gun never left the holster.

Sanchez Soto was also detained as a result of this action.

Both men were arrested. Corona Contreras faces charges of disorderly intoxication and disturbing the peace. Sanchez Soto faces charges of battery on specified personnel and obstruction.
