Immokalee mural celebrates farm workers, supports local child education

IMMOKALEE, Fla.—A vibrant mural in downtown Immokalee captures the essence of the local farm-working community, symbolizing the area's tight-knit rural spirit.

This mural is more than just art; it is a gateway to opportunities for local children.

"This mural is a depiction of the farm working communities," said Jay Robison, Corporate and Sponsorship Gifts Manager for the Redland Christian Migrant Association (RCMA).

RCMA, founded in 1965, provides child care and educational opportunities to nearly 800 children across Collier County. The nonprofit organization supports families who cannot afford to send their children to traditional schools.

"That's where RCMA comes into, comes in to help," said Robison, who manages grants for the organization.

Robison explained that RCMA's early learning centers help develop and educate children whose families might otherwise struggle to provide such opportunities.

Ida Eguia, RCMA Immokalee Area Coordinator, conducts at-home site visits for children in the area.

"Some of these kids might be even going out to the groves, working with their parents if they didn't have a place to come," said Eguia.

Instead, many children attend the RCMA Child Development Center, where grants from the Naples Children and Education Foundation fund specialist salaries, programming, and dual-language learning tools.

"You can see it right behind me. It goes to the kids, making sure that they have the head start that they need, getting ready for kindergarten," said Eguia. "We also provide health screenings, developmental screenings to make sure that they're well."

Eguia emphasized that the center provides peace of mind for families, knowing their children are well cared for, thanks to the foundation's grants.

"For the families to have that peace of mind, that they can come here and that they know that their children are very well cared for, and that's all thanks to the NCF foundation that we get our grant through," said Eguia.

The bright smiles of children on the playground are a testament to the bright futures ahead.
