Safety concerns rise as Lee County cyclist spots hazards on Summerlin Road

LEE COUNTY - A local man is raising concerns about safety hazards along Summerlin Road, one of the busiest roads in Lee County.

Jason Gerrish, a frequent cyclist on the route, has noticed numerous issues like exposed wires and broken sidewalks. He said, "There are a number of things that I've noticed as I cycle that route a lot, including dilapidated, abandoned utility boxes. It almost seems like they’re forgotten."

Gerrish has documented over 80 problem spots near Winkler Road. His photos show irrigation pipes sticking out, broken sidewalk edges, sand and gravel on cycling paths, and knocked-down fencing near Shell Point Preserve. "To see the conditions like that, it just, I felt like it kind of looks poorly on us as to how we maintain and take care of our community," he said.

Gerrish is concerned these hazards could lead to injuries. "Open wires, hanging out, there is a safety concern there," he said.

After contacting the county multiple times and filing a formal request, Gerrish learned that the utility equipment is maintained by a private company, not the county. The county is investigating his other concerns.

Gerrish initially blamed Hurricane Ian but realized the issues have persisted for years. He hopes his concerns will be addressed soon.
