Kentucky family stuck in Fort Myers after winter weather cancels flights

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. —

A family from Kentucky finds themselves unexpectedly enjoying the chilly yet warmer weather of Fort Myers Beach after a winter storm canceled their flight home.

The Ahearn family, who recently went on a cruise in Miami, now find themselves unable to return home due to a winter storm up north.

"We got a lot of snow in Kentucky and ice," said Jon Ahearn.

Their flight out of Miami Saturday was canceled, forcing them to book a more expensive flight from Fort Myers Thursday.

The family is stuck in Fort Myers until at least Thursday, waiting for the snow to melt. This is their first time in Fort Myers. Despite the inconvenience, they are not entirely unhappy with their situation.

"There's not really anything to do," Ahearn said, but added, "This isn't cold. This is warm."

While the Gulf Coast's chilly weather is unusual for locals, the Ahearns are taking advantage of the opportunity to tan and enjoy the Florida weather.

"As long as I get home at some point, I'll be fine," Ahearn said.
