Yes, it gets cold here: Frost spotted in Southwest Florida

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA, Fla.—Parts of Southwest Florida woke up to a rare sight this morning—frost!

A powerful cold front pushed through the area, sending temperatures plunging into the 30s and 40s overnight.

So how does frost form here? 

Weather Authority Meteorologist Lauren Kreidler explains: “When strong cold fronts bring in colder, drier air, that cold air settles into low-lying areas like inland communities and even front lawns. With clear skies, light winds, and temperatures dropping this low, patchy frost can develop.”

WINK News viewers spotted frost from inland areas near LaBelle all the way to North Fort Myers, closer to the coast.

Is relief on its way?

The chilly mornings are not quite over yet, as temperatures over the next few days will dip into the 30s and 40s, keeping frost possible each morning.

Cold weather advisories are in effect across Southwest Florida due to the chilly temperatures. DeSoto County is under a rare freeze warning from midnight to 9 a.m., with temperatures expected to fall below freezing.
