Construction begins for new sidewalk for Fort Myers Middle School students

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Construction has begun for a sidewalk along Moreno Avenue in Fort Myers. This development aims to provide a safer route for students attending Fort Myers Middle School, who currently navigate through streets, ditches, and yards to get to school.

The City of Fort Myers initiated the construction earlier this month and anticipates completion by the end of February. However, the sidewalk will only cover half of the road, as the remaining portion belongs to unincorporated Lee County.

"What my hope is that once the city finished doing the work that they need to do in the city, then completes the project of adding the sidewalk for our students be able to walk on that the county comes out and recognize that there's some unfinished work that needs to be done to ensure that students and even community have a safe place to walk when walking down the street," said Brian Gibson, principal of Fort Myers Middle School.

Lee County is not participating in the sidewalk project. According to the county's communications director, the project is not included in the budget.
