Fort Myers names Cypress Lake's Joey Mendes as head football coach

FORT MYERS, Fla.—Fort Myers High School announced Joey Mendes as the new head football coach for the Green Wave football program, pending School Board approval.

Mendes, a Fort Myers High School alum from the Class of 2006, has a notable coaching record in Lee County. At Cypress Lake High School, he became the first head coach to achieve back-to-back district championships and led the team to its first regional playoff appearance in 2024.

"I want to thank my wife and kids for their unwavering support, and I’m incredibly grateful to Cypress Lake High School for everything over the last 10 years," said Mendes.

He also led Cypress Lake to the state playoffs three times in five years, with a 7-3 record last season.

"I also want to thank Fort Myers High School for the opportunity to lead this program and continue the tradition of excellence established by the Sirianni family over the past several decades," said Mendes.

Fort Myers High School eagerly anticipates Mendes' return to continue the traditions and values set by legendary Coach Sammy Sirianni, who announced his retirement last year.
