Lee County faces ongoing illegal school bus passing issues

LEE COUNTY, Fla. —

Efforts to stop illegal school bus passing in Lee County have been in effect for more than a month, yet violations continue to add to the thousands of tickets already issued.

Robyn Rice from North Fort Myers expressed her disbelief at the ongoing issue, saying, "I think that's absolutely ridiculous. I don't understand how people could not stop at a bus stop when it has red lights on it. You clearly can see it. And it's dangerous for the kids getting on and off the bus."

A new video from the Lee County Sheriff's Office shows a car stopping for a school bus, getting rear-ended, and then a van driving into the median to pass both the cars and the stopped school bus. This incident is one of the 8,905 violations recorded since enforcement began in December.

Joseph Basile, also from North Fort Myers, commented on the situation, saying, "It's such a high number. I wish I could say it was surprising because it happens a lot."

These violations have resulted in more than $2 million in fines, with each citation costing $225. Fortunately, 90% of those who received a ticket did not receive a second one. However, some residents believe the penalties should be more severe.

Drivers are reminded to be vigilant around school buses and exercise patience, as safe driving could save a life and save some money.
