SWFL residents advised to protect outdoor pipes to prevent plumbing issues as cold weather arrives

CAPE CORAL, Fla. —

With temperatures expected to dip even lower this weekend along the Gulf Coast, residents are being advised to prepare their outdoor spaces to avoid issues like frozen pipes and pool pumps.

James Verrelli of Superior Plumbing Solutions emphasized the importance of having a plumber on standby, similar to having a doctor or attorney ready for emergencies.

"Most importantly, they should have a plumber kind of on standby, just like you have a doctor, just like you have an attorney. You should have a plumber on standby," Verrelli said.

As another cold front approaches, the risk of expensive repairs looms, making it crucial for homeowners to take preventive steps now. Plumbers suggest that there are actions residents can take today to avoid hefty bills later.

"We're not in freezing temperatures, so homeowners should watch out for recommendations from plumbers. They should watch out for any, you know, outliers in their yard. Let's say they have some PVC that's a little bit older in their yard. They should be mindful of that. Can become a little bit more brittle. You know, a little bump from a lawnmower can break it," Verrelli said.

Verrelli highlighted the importance of identifying any piping that may need replacement in outdoor living spaces before temperatures drop further. Based on his experience, he does not anticipate indoor pipe bursts for those living along the Gulf Coast.

"I think, living in Southwest Florida, is the fact that we haven't actually hit freezing temperatures yet, right? And so we don't have to worry as much about burst pipes," Verrelli said. "I will say that cold water does 100% agitate preexisting conditions."

To prevent pipes from freezing, pipe insulation is recommended for pool pumps and pipes, and running the pool pump to circulate water is suggested as the cold front approaches.
