New driver's license numbers in Florida may affect mail-in voting

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

Florida residents who recently obtained new driver's licenses may face challenges in receiving vote-by-mail ballots due to changes in identification numbers, urging voters to verify their information with election supervisors.

Jenna Satterfield from Fort Myers expressed concern about the situation, saying, "They said everything matches, so it's renewed." She added, "It just seems like the current administration doesn't want people to vote."

The issue stems from a law requiring a new random driver's license number when obtaining a new license, which may not be on file with the supervisor of elections.

Leslie Mota from Cape Coral shared her worries, stating, "It would be totally uncomfortable and upsetting to show up on Election Day and not vote. Because two government agencies failed to speak to one another."

In some cases, individuals are not choosing to renew their voter registration simultaneously with their driver's license renewal, which contributes to the problem.

Gabby Aguire, spokesperson for the Lee County Supervisor of Elections, emphasized the importance of updating voter information, saying, "We want to make sure that voters have their latest information up to date in our system to avoid any setbacks or delays."

Gulf Coast News notes that this isn't the only reason voters may not receive a vote-by-mail ballot. After the general election, all supervisors had to clear previous vote-by-mail requests, so contacting the supervisor's office is crucial to ensure readiness for voting.
