Cold Weather Q&A: What to know ahead of our big cooldown

THE WEATHER AUTHORITY, (WINK) — A strong cold front is heading toward Southwest Florida with the chilliest air we’ve seen in a while. Weather Authority Meteorologist Lauren Kreidler asked on Facebook what you want to know — here’s your cold-weather Q&A.

Q: When does the cold air arrive?

A: The cold front moves through the day today. Behind it, temperatures will steadily fall through the evening, with the coldest air settling in overnight and early Sunday morning.

Q: How cold will it get?

A: Inland areas are expected to dip into the upper 20s to low 30s. Coastal communities will see temperatures in the 30s.

Q: Will there be a freeze?

A: Yes, a freeze is possible for parts of Southwest Florida, with patchy frost expected for some. A Freeze Warning is in place for portions of our area, including inland Lee and Collier Counties. A Freeze Warning has been issued due to a hard freeze with temperatures in the 20s and 30s expected.

Q: Will we see snow here in Southwest Florida?

A: I'm not saying no! Chances are low, but a few flurries are possible from 11 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday. The best chance of seeing a few flurries will be in areas such as coastal Charlotte and coastal Sarasota counties.

Q: What causes frost and freezing temperatures here?

A: When a cold front pushes through, dry air and clear skies allow warmer air to escape quickly overnight. Cold air sinks into low-lying areas, which is why inland and rural spots get colder faster. With the temperatures we are expecting in the 20s and 30s, frost is very likely, just like we have seen in previous mornings.

Q: What should I do to prepare?

Bring sensitive plants inside or cover them.
Check on pets and bring them indoors.
Make sure space heaters are used safely.

Q: How long will the cold last?

A: The coldest mornings will be tomorrow and Monday with temperatures in the 20s and 30s. We start warming back up by the middle part of the week, though temperatures will still be below normal.
