Glades County Schools to excuse absences due to cold weather

Dr. Alice Beth Barfield, superintendent of Glades County School District, addressed recent criticisms regarding her decision to excuse student absences due to cold weather on Monday.

"If you're upset about me prioritizing student safety over who has the warmest car, the most coats, or the easiest commute, you're missing the point," said Barfield.

She emphasized the rural nature of Glades County, explaining the school district has some of the longest bus routes in the state of Florida.

"Some students wait alone at the end of long dirt roads. In the dark. In open wind. In freezing temperatures," said Barfield.

She continued, "Southwest Florida has a different climate and school districts farther north. Our average temperature is not in the 20s, and our priority remains the safety of every student."

She explained that the decision to excuse absences was not made based off privilege or convenience.

"My job is to protect every student, especially those with no one standing beside them to ensure they're safe or no one to be their voice to make sure they are heard," said Barfield.

Barfield stated her commitment to student safety, even if it means making unpopular decisions.

"For those who say we're 'raising snowflakes' or teaching kids to be weak—let me be clear: teaching a five-year-old, to stand waiting on a bus without proper clothing or shelter...is not a lesson in toughness I feel is one anyone deserves," she said.

Barfield encouraged the community to express concerns through proper channels like school board meetings or the district office.

She concluded by supporting parents' decisions regarding their children's attendance, assuring that schools would provide a warm and welcoming environment for those attending.
