Sand restoration underway at Tigertail Lagoon and Sand Dollar Island on Marco Island

MARCO ISLAND, Fla. —

Sand restoration work is underway at Tigertail Lagoon and Sand Dollar Island on Marco Island.

According to the city of Marco Island, restoration work is being done to maintain compliance with state permit requirements.

The maintenance is focused on maintaining nesting habitats and storm protective functions of the sandy berm. The work was authorized by state and federal environmental agencies that require maintenance ahead of nesting seasons, the city said.

Some of the work includes grading the sand berm to address escarpments, which are large, steep slopes, as well as clearing small shoaling sections near the mudflat to maintain tidal flow to the southern part of the lagoon. The work will be completed in advance of bird and turtle nesting seasons, the city said.

The work is contracted through the city of Marco Island with funding from the Hideaway Beach Tax District. City of Marco Island tax dollars are not being used for the project or the ongoing maintenance, the city said.
