Naples father charged in tragic July 2025 shooting of 13-year-old son

NAPLES, Fla. — Authorities have arrested Gregory Zecca in connection with a tragic shooting in Naples that occurred more than six months ago.

Zecca, 39, faces charges of aggravated manslaughter of a child and using a firearm while under the influence.

The incident took place in July 2025 at the Crest at Naples Apartments, where Zecca is accused of fatally shooting his 13-year-old son.

Zecca appeared in court via conference call, where a judge ordered him to be held without bond pending the state's motion for a pretrial detention.

Jonathan Spellman, a criminal defense attorney in Fort Myers, explained that the delay in arresting Zecca is not uncommon.

"That's not uncommon for arrests to occur at a later date," said Spellman.

Spellman said, "Oftentimes, law enforcement is gathering, whether it be toxicology records or witness statements, and trying to put together a better idea of how an event occurred before bringing charges for more serious crimes. It's more common to have a delay."

According to the 44-page arrest affidavit, Zecca had been drinking and using marijuana prior to the shooting, and witnesses reported he was practicing drawing and dry-firing a gun from his waistband.

A witness said Zecca inserted a magazine into his 9mm handgun and pulled the trigger while play-fighting with his son near the front door.

A toxicology report estimated Zecca's blood alcohol level was .116 at the time of the shooting, well above the legal limit.

Spellman said the case could take a while to reach a verdict.

"That whole process, especially when the media is involved respectfully, it does tend to put things under more of a microscope. The pace tends to slow, in my experience, and you're looking at about probably two years, and the case will be set for a trial or some sort of a disposition," said Spellman.
