FORT MYERS, Fla. - Hurricane Ian left a significant mark on Fort Myers, erasing the beloved Tarpon Street Pier, a landmark where generations of families gathered and walked together.
After years of rebuilding, the pier is finally reopening, marking a significant step in restoring the community's identity.
The Tarpon Street Pier, once washed away, is now back and stronger than ever. Elgin Hicks, Fort Myers' director of parks and recreation, explained the improvements made to ensure the pier's resilience against future challenges.
"Being able to build the pier a little bit higher than it was before, so that those water levels get up, being able to build like using the materials, so that they can give a little bit when the currents in those waters kind of get up to those dangerous levels that maybe the regular materials that we've used in the past wouldn't been able to withstand," said Hicks.
City leaders emphasized that reviving the pier was about more than just replacing a structure. It was about restoring the quality of life for the community.
