CAPE CORAL, Fla.—A massive new development, Cape Coral Grove, is planned for Pine Island Road in Cape Coral.
This ambitious 131-acre mixed-use project promises to bring more than 1,000 apartments, along with restaurants and retail space.
However, it also raises questions about its impact on local businesses and wildlife, as well as the potential for overdevelopment.
Ken Wahmhoff believes growth is essential for the community.
"The wrong turn would be not allowing for expansion. You've got to continue to expand, or you die," said Wahmhoff.
Not everyone shares Wahmhoff's enthusiasm. Cheryl Rivet expressed concerns about preserving the area's existing charm and tranquility.
"They're taking away the beauty, it was like, nice and quiet here and peaceful," said Rivet.
Rivet also worries about the impact on downtown Cape Coral's local businesses.
"These other businesses that have been here for a long time and just trying to make it. The small guys aren't going to get their money anymore, and they're not going to be able to compete," said Rivet.
Her concerns extend beyond economics to the local wildlife.
"Little by little, they're taking away like every wildlife that's here. Thank God the owls are protected, but none of the other animals are, and every time they tear down something, they're ruining the wildlife here," said Rivet.
As Cape Coral continues to grow, the community faces important decisions about how this development will shape the future.
WINK News contacted L&L Development for a statement regarding the new development.
A group spokesperson responded with, “We continue to progress on the extensive pre-construction work that a town center of this size requires to support necessary infrastructure and prepare for vertical development. We are actively working with the City of Cape Coral on approvals and coordination as we advance the project.”
