Local retired NFL referee talks Super Bowl 60

Super Bowl 60 is happening this Sunday, and while fans across the nation will be glued to their screens, one man in Naples might know the referee calls before they even happen.

Jeff Rice, a former NFL umpire, spent 25 years on the field and has a treasure trove of memories from his career. His mancave is filled with Super Bowl rings, coin toss coins, and footballs from various games, including Super Bowls, Pro Bowls, and international matches.

Rice said he misses the excitement of being on the field.

"Well, the camaraderie, the lights, the action being in front of everybody and walking out the tunnel to 80,000 screaming fans and a few million watching on TV," said Rice.

Rice officiated from 1995 to 2020, starting his Super Bowl journey as an alternate in Super Bowl 35. Super Bowl 36, right after the events of 9/11, holds a special place in his heart.

When asked about his prediction for this year's game, Rice shared his thoughts.

"I got to go with the Seahawks," said Rice. "I've had the Patriots in two Super Bowls, but I just think the Seahawks are a more complete team. They've got an excellent defense, and I think Donald has a bit more experience than Drake May. So we'll see. I think it should be a good game. I don't think it's going to be a blowout."
