Veterans who served are now being served in their time of need

In Fort Myers, veterans who need help feeding themselves and their families can find support at Hearts and Homes for Veterans on Alicia Street.

This nonprofit organization, founded by a veteran, offers essential services to those who once served the nation.

Dale Spain, a 17-year veteran of the Marine Corps, now leads Hearts and Homes for Veterans.

"We service about 250 to 300 veterans a month," said Spain.

Army veteran Darrell Davis shared his experience with the organization.

"They got the food bank. Come and get food every month, once a month," said Davis.

The nonprofit provides more than just food. Veterans can receive household items, towels, blankets, and even furniture if needed. Davis expressed his gratitude for the support he received during tough times.

"The people here, they are so, so good, so good people. When I first met, the first director here that I met, I was going through a whole big thing with my rent, with everything, but he was right there for me," said Davis.

Spain emphasized their mission to uplift veterans beyond just providing immediate assistance.

"Come and see us. Let us help. Let us give you that helping hand. Let us see how we can better benefit you. We're not here just to give you a handout and say, you know, go about your life. We want to help you grow and do better. So if there's anything you need, just let us know," said Spain.

Davis encouraged potential donors to contribute.

"I tell them, get to your checkbook and hurry up and get there, because a lot of veterans need it," said Davis.

Hearts and Homes for Veterans continues to be a vital resource for those who once served, providing a sense of community and support.
