Residents of Lehigh Acres are experiencing significant mail delivery issues following a change in postal routes, leading to missing packages and delayed checks that have disrupted their lives and businesses.
Deenah Torres, who lives in the impacted area, said, "We had the same postal delivery person for the 20 years that we were there. And in the last six months, they changed." She noted that regular mail deliveries have become inconsistent, with items that once arrived reliably now missing.
Torres recounted an incident where a package intended for her son's birthday was returned to the sender, marked as "delivery address was inaccessible," despite no apparent obstacles. She said, "We are not in a gated community; we don’t have construction, or you know, road closure issues. The mailbox is the same spot it’s been in for the last 20 years."
Another package containing prescription sunglasses was scanned as delivered but never arrived, with USPS claiming it was delivered days before the expected date. "We walked out to the mailbox and there was no package," Torres said.
Her husband, Jason Torres, echoed the sentiment, saying, "Said, delivered and poof, gone. It's not delivered."
He described the uncertainty as a daily challenge, stating, "It went from having a consistent basis, consistently knowing your mail is going to be there, to I don't know."
Michelle Mace, who helps run her family's electrical business from their Lehigh Acres home, has also faced delays in receiving checks. "We were waiting on some checks from customers that we have and they weren’t…they weren’t being delivered," she said. When the held mail finally arrived, USPS had noted that trash cans were blocking the mailbox, a claim Mace disputes. "They should at least put a sticker on our box saying, you know, whatever the issue is, instead of holding our mail," she said.
Gulf Coast News reached out to USPS, which responded with a statement saying:
“The Postal Service appreciates its customers and always strives to provide excellent service. Lehigh Acres has experienced significant residential growth over the past year and in an effort to continually improve service, we have added additional routes to account for this rapid expansion. Regarding mail delivery in the area, local postal officials report that all mail and packages are being delivered as soon as they are received, and that the Lehigh Acres Post Office is fully staffed. Customers are reminded that they can reach us in a variety of ways, including by contacting their local Post Office, calling 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777), or visiting us on our website at www.usps.com/help for assistance.”
However, residents like Michelle and Deenah feel this does not reflect their experiences. "Yeah, I think it’s more of an excuse they don’t want to address," Mace said. Deenah added, "I physically went to the post office. I called. I emailed. I filled out the form online. And every response was either, ‘wait for it to show up,’ or ‘someone will contact you back.’ And no one ever did."
Despite repeated attempts by Gulf Coast News to secure a local interview with USPS to get you answers, the agency declined, referring back to its written statement.
Jason Torres summed up the frustration, saying, "You're stuck between a rock and a hard place." For residents, the issue extends beyond late packages to affecting connections with family and business operations.
"You have consistency for 20 years and then you just abruptly stop...here we are," Jason said.
USPS advises customers to contact their local post office or use its help channels for assistance, but residents report that these efforts have not yielded any clear answers.
