Man accused of DUI at 130 mph in North Fort Myers, drugs found in car

NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. —

A man was arrested in North Fort Myers Tuesday morning after being accused of drunk driving at 130 mph.

According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, a deputy was conducting speed enforcement at around 12:33 a.m. on North Tamiami Trail at Edison Bridge when a car sped past at what the radar determined to be 130 mph. The area was a construction zone, LCSO said.

The vehicle then slowed down drastically to below 45 mph, which is the posted speed limit, and the deputy conducted a traffic stop, LCSO said.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Niko Daniel Fernandez, 26. The deputy had Fernandez exit the vehicle, and when he did, the deputy noticed a strong odor of alcohol on Fernandez's breath, as well as bloodshot eyes and slurred speech, LCSO said.

The deputy had Fernandez participate in standard field sobriety exercises, which he failed, LCSO said.

While arresting Fernandez, deputies searched his car and found drug paraphernalia, what appeared to be marijuana, cocaine and a glass pipe that contained traces of methamphetamine, according to LCSO.

Fernandez was arrested and faces charges of DUI, refusal to submit to DUI testing, driving at 100-plus mph, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and drug equipment possession.
