Punta Gorda man accused of drug possession, leading FHP troopers on high-speed motorcycle chase

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. —

A man in Charlotte County is accused of drug possession and driving away from Florida Highway Patrol state troopers, according to an arrest report.

Troopers say they spotted Cash Jeffery Wright, 37, driving northbound on Interstate 75 near Jones Loop Road on his motorcycle at a high rate of speed. Troopers also say Wright's taillight had been painted over with black spray paint.

Troopers chased the motorcycle onto Jones Loop Road, eventually following it off the road and into a grassy area. Troopers say Wright entered Strasse Boulevard when he lost control of his motorcycle while merging onto the highway. The motorcycle overturned, they say, and Wright was thrown from it and landed 10 feet away.

After detaining and searching Wright, they say he spontaneously admitted to having methamphetamine in his pocket. A search of his pocket revealed 4.1 grams of meth, according to the report.

When asked why he drove away, troopers say Wright initially told them that he did not realize they were behind him. They say he eventually admitted that he drove away because of the meth in his pocket.

Troopers say Wright told them that it was his "bad luck" that he was caught, and that he only recently began using drugs.

Wright was charged with drug possession, reckless driving, and fleeing and eluding law enforcement at a high rate of speed.
