Charlotte High School band director joins US Army as conductor, leaving behind a legacy

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (WINK) — Tommy Bunnens, the director of bands at Charlotte High School, is taking a significant step in his music career. He was chosen to become a conductor for the United States Army band, a prestigious role that is both rare and coveted.

But his journey all started in the very room where he now teaches. At Charlotte High School, as a student.

"This is where I fell in love with music, was this room, and to actually get to teach in this room is really special," said Bunnens.

Bunnens said he first found his passion for music after attending a Navy band concert back in 2010.

Now, as he prepares to embark on this new chapter, he's living another full-circle moment.

"To my literal bewilderment, they offered me one of the roles," said Bunnens. "So I was just really thrilled."

Bunnens is responsible for Charlotte High's Silver King marching band, the symphonic band, wind orchestra, eurythmics, percussion ensemble and the school's Silver "Swing" big band.

His students feel a mix of emotions about his departure. Annabella, a junior and second chair trumpet player in one of Bunnens' band classes, expressed her feelings.

"It's really bittersweet, because it's like he's going on to bigger and greater things," she said. "And that's amazing, like, we all wish the best for him, but it's also it's sad, because it's like he's been our band director for my, you know, 3 years."

Kanyon, a senior and first chair tuba player in the same class, shared how Bunnens has influenced his future.

"He is the reason I'm going to college for music education," said Kanyon.

Bunnens is reflecting on both his 4 years as a student and his 6 years as a faculty member at the school.

"A third of my life I've spent in this room," he said. "And so, you know, to move on. It's an exciting venture, but it's, it's really bittersweet. I mean, there's so many cool things we've done here, and I have so many memories, and I've had so many amazing students."

Kanyon said he hopes to reunite with Bunnens soon.

"I'm nothing but excited for him, and I even said maybe one day I will be able to join him again underneath his Army band," said Kanyon.

Charlotte High School's band will have its final concert of the school year on May 1, celebrating the school's centennial year. This concert will mark Bunnens' last performance with the students.
