Armed cyclist in Cape Coral draws mixed reactions

CAPE CORAL, Fla. —

An armed cyclist spotted at Country Club Blvd and Veterans Memorial Parkway in Cape Coral has sparked conversations among residents about road safety.

Barbara Bolton from Cape Coral expressed her confusion, saying, "I think that's pretty bold of him to do that. I don't understand why he would do that. That makes no sense to me."

Chris Lukaszczyk commented on the driving conditions in Cape Coral, noting, "In Cape Coral, you never know with how people drive here, I don't think he had enough lights matter of fact."

The sight of the armed cyclist has raised questions about whether such measures make biking on Cape Coral roads safer. Arsenio Godinho, owner of Paradise Bicycle in Cape Coral, said, "You can put as many lights on your bike to make you comfortable that you are being seen." He added, "As a firearm enthusiast, I would never do that. Even if I felt that I was in danger from a car, I don't know what that would do."

Godinho, who often sees bike accidents where the biker is hit from behind, advised, "At a stop sign out of light. You want to be seen. You don't want to be hit. As soon as you get going, get out of the way."

In this instance, the armed cyclist was noticed. Katie Stewart from Cape Coral remarked, "I think he is doing a pretty good job drawing attention to himself."

For some residents, biking on main roads is considered too risky. Chuck Morelle shared his personal decision, saying, "I personally don't drive a bike around Cape Coral because I fear somebody may lose it and I may be hit."

State numbers show seven bicyclists have died in crashes in Florida this year, with one of those fatalities occurring in Collier County.
