Tommy Watkins, a Riverdale High School graduate, embarked on a new chapter in his career by joining the Atlanta Braves as their third base coach. Watkins spent nearly 30 years with the Minnesota Twins organization, first as a player and most recently as the team's third base coach. However, during the offseason, the Twins made changes to their coaching staff, prompting Watkins to seek a new team.
"Same colors, but it feels good putting this uniform on," said Watkins, expressing his excitement about his new role with the Braves.
Watkins is in his first spring training with the Atlanta Braves, maintaining his position as third base coach.
"It's been good being around all the new faces and getting to know new people," said Watkins.
The Minnesota Twins drafted Watkins in 1998, and he served as their third base coach before the recent staff changes.
"It was a long offseason, not knowing," said Watkins, reflecting on the uncertainty he faced during the transition.
After nearly three decades with the Twins, Watkins found himself searching for a new opportunity.
"I've been in the game for a long time, and my first time actually trying to find something else," said Watkins.
He eventually joined the staff of new manager Walt Weis with the Atlanta Braves.
"I was fortunate to land somewhere else to keep my dream alive. And I want to work as hard as possible, learn as much as possible, and have fun doing it," said Watkins.
Watkins has made CoolToday Park in North Port his new spring office, with an added bonus of staying in Southwest Florida.
"I'm actually still staying in Fort Myers. But it's good to still see my parents every day. And go home to a home-cooked meal," said Watkins, appreciating the proximity to his family.
