Marco Island softball league becomes symbol of empowerment and community for women

MARCO ISLAND- Marco Island is buzzing with excitement as a growing community of women softball players takes to the field. This vibrant group has doubled in size, bringing energy and camaraderie to the game.

Cherise Cuevasloy, a dedicated player, shared her feelings about the sport.

"The only thing I can liken it to is what it must be like to be a rock star, because you feel like you're on top of the world," said Cuevasloy.

Cuevasloy's passion for softball began in the stands, inspired by her uncle after losing her father at age seven.

"Since I lost my dad and I was seven, that's his brother, and he's had a special place in my heart always," said Cuevasloy. "I'd come watch his games, or even watch the pickup games in the summer."

Now, it's her turn to shine on the field.

"To actually play a game and feel what it's like to go through being in the sun, being under the pressure, with the crowds, it's so different," said Cuevasloy.

Co-chair Michele Evangelista explained how the league grew through simple word of mouth.

"It was really word of mouth. We just talked to the women and said, Come on, let's have some fun," said Evangelista.

The enthusiasm was contagious.

"We have 30 girls, 15 a team," said Evangelista. "Last year it was half that," added Kim Coyle, another co-chair.

The league has become a symbol of empowerment and community spirit.

"It's, you know, all about the women, you know, doing it together, and the comradery and some of us are really good. Not me, though," said Coyle. "My favorite part of this is just seeing everybody who's here smile and laugh, and it's just such a nice community, feeling."

For Cuevasloy, the experience is deeply meaningful.

"For all the women to have this empowering event where we're having an opportunity to cheer for what we normally do, and then cheer for ourselves. It's really nice, really special," said Cuevasloy.

The women of Marco Island are not just playing softball; they are creating a supportive and joyful community.
