One person is confirmed dead after a small plane crashed west of Everglades City in the Ten Thousand Islands on Sunday. The pilot was hospitalized with unknown injuries.
Gulf Coast News confirmed with the family of the victim that Ryan Cody, who was a passenger, did not survive.
Cody was a member of Saint Finbarr Catholic Parish in Naples, the parish told Gulf Coast News.
A friend of the pilot told Gulf Coast News on Monday evening that the pilot, William Goodrich, is alive and in the hospital.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash of the 1981 Cessna A185F aircraft. According to the agency, the plane crashed under unknown circumstances, overturned in the water, and was partially submerged.
The plane was removed from the water and was at the Goodland Boat Park on Marco Island.
The Collier County Sheriff's Office said deputies, along with fire and EMS crews, responded to reports of a plane in the water near the Port of the Islands resort, between Marco Island and Everglades City.
The aircraft is registered to Black Dog Holding, Inc. in Pleasant Valley, New York.
According to the CCSO incident report, when crews responded to the scene, they saw a private fishing vessel tied to the plane with a person in the water holding Cody.
Cody was then lifted out of the water and placed on a boat until he was transferred to Fire and EMS personnel at the Port of the Islands Marina dock.
He was pronounced dead at approximately 1:39 p.m. Sunday by EMS. Goodrich was taken to the hospital via ambulance, according to the report.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
