Naples portrait artist explores new theme with St. Matthew's House

NAPLES, Fla. —

In the time Wendy Wagner has sketched countless faces, she's heard just as many stories.

"You find out how fascinating they [her subjects] are, what they've been through, what they've seen," said Wagner.

She's heard stories revealing the complex nature of femininity.

"I like to show the many sides we have," said Wagner.

Stories inspiring the beauty of what's real.

"There's enough Photoshop and artificial intelligence images in the world," said Wagner.

This year, for the first time in a long time, Wagner explores a new theme.

One rare for her, yet a common reality for many.

In her work, "Faces Beyond Homelessness," Wagner partners with the Naples nonprofit St. Matthew's House to feature 10 faces of those without a home.

People like Doreen, Wagner's subject today.

"I mean, this is probably a tough time in my life," said Doreen.

For Wagner, in pursuit of this project, she sees the often overlooked, yet simple common thread between us all.

"It's so easy to categorize people or label them, but when you really get down to it, we're just people. We're all trying our best," said Wagner.

"Hope is knowing I was a success and hoping I will be again soon," said Doreen.
