Restoration of Pond Apple Park pond bank begins, city of Sanibel announces

LEE COUNTY, Fla. —

The city of Sanibel has begun restoration on the bank of Pond Apple Park, it announced in a press release.

The release said that the city's contractor has begun repairing collapsed slopes along Pond 3, which is part of its effluent disposal system that sustained damage during Hurricane Ian.

It added that restoring the Pond 3 slopes strengthens a critical component of Sanibel's wastewater infrastructure and reduces the risk of future storm-related erosion. Construction is expected to be completed by April 2026.

The scope of the project includes:

• Restoring approximately 900 linear feet of pond bank
• Dredging eroded material from Pond 3 and rebuilding slopes
• Installing a geocell reinforcement system with geotextile fabric to strengthen the slopes
• Planting approximately 2,810 square yards of perennial peanut groundcover to reduce future erosion

The work is supported by funding from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection through the Hurricane Ian Effluent Disposal Pond Apple Site Repairs Grant (HA034).
