Catch the Twins in Fort Myers: Tips for a smooth Hammond Stadium visit

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Spring training is in full swing in Fort Myers, and fans are eagerly heading to Hammond Stadium to watch the Minnesota Twins in action. However, before making their way to the ballpark, there are a few important things to keep in mind.

For Minnesota natives escaping the cold, attending spring training at Hammond Stadium is a must. Many snowbirds choose to spend part of the year in Southwest Florida to be close to their team.

"It certainly did. We come here every year," said Vicki Palokangas, a Minnesota native.

Fans say the atmosphere and the access to players make watching the Twins at Hammond Stadium special.

"It's just such a comfortable kind of atmosphere to be in," said Rex Holzemer, another Minnesota native. "You know, you've got access to the players, you're close to the field, and it's just relaxed. So, yeah, it's a neat experience."

Part of that access comes before the first pitch even happens.

"I love watching my husband look at all the promising players and trying to get an autograph," said Palokangas.

Gates open two hours early, providing fans the best chance for autographs.

"Try to get here a little bit earlier," said Victor Gonzalez, assistant director of Florida operations. "Give yourself a little bit of time to catch the visiting team's BP, and if you get here a little early, you can go to the backfields and check out some of the minor league guys working out, and even some of our major league guys getting ready for the game."

Arriving early also helps avoid traffic.

"There's a lot of support from local DOT, with all the construction going on," said Gonzalez. "There's a coordinated effort to make sure there's no construction three hours before or after the start of the game. So that'll be really helpful to keeping traffic flowing here on Daniels Parkway and Six Mile Cypress."

Parking this year is completely cashless, which officials say has helped move cars into the lot faster.

"The fans here are very warm and loving... Minnesota Nice," said Palokangas.

From the warmth of "Minnesota Nice" in the stands to a little planning before arriving, a smooth trip to the ballpark starts now.
