Florida's agriculture sector suffered more than $3 billion in estimated losses due to recent freezes, according to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
"Our preliminary estimate of over $3 billion in agricultural losses makes clear what we already knew: This was one of the most damaging freeze events for Florida agriculture in history," said Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson.
Simpson emphasized the need for significant support for farmers, ranchers, and growers who are crucial to feeding communities. He thanked President Donald Trump and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins for their support.
The estimated losses include significant impacts on various crops: $164 million for tomatoes, $307 million for strawberries, $1.15 billion for sugarcane, and $675 million for citrus.
A recovery effort is underway, with the state ready to administer federal block grant funding to help producers recover and replant.
