Kitten season arrives early at Gulf Coast Humane Society

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

Kitten season, or the peak of cat breeding, has arrived early, offering a wide selection of cats for adoption as roommates Jessica Mitchell and Madison Curran search for a new pet.

"I've been looking at a ton of different cats lately," Mitchell said. She expressed excitement about the variety of cats available for adoption, noting, "I feel like each day I look, and there's somebody new."

In Florida, kitten season tends to run year-round due to the warm climate, but this year, the peak breeding season has arrived a couple of weeks earlier than usual.

Kristin Sampson, operations director at the Gulf Coast Humane Society, said, "Cat season is when a majority of the kittens are born."

A majority of kittens are usually the first part of March.

"We prepare by getting supplies. Donations are very important. Also, trainings with foster parents to make sure they're ready to take on these little ones, including bottle feeding, because these guys are too small. They need a mom," she said.

Despite the difficulty in choosing, Jessica and Madison believe they have found the perfect new roommate among the kittens at the shelter.
