FORT MYERS, Fla.—Hammond Stadium is making strides to ensure that spring training is an inclusive experience for everyone.
The stadium has introduced a sensory room designed for fans who may find the usual ballpark excitement overwhelming.
Previously a team store, the space was transformed through a collaboration with Family Initiative, Lee Health, and Golisano Children's Hospital.
The sensory room features weighted teddy bears, magnetic tiles, calming bubble tables, rockers, and color-changing fixtures, all designed to help children regulate and relax.
Victor Gonzalez, assistant director of Florida operations, said, "Last spring, we had over 1000 families visit this space, and we've gotten countless emails and text messages about how much this space means to families that typically wouldn't come to a sporting event like this, and now they feel comfortable to come here because they have a safe spot to come to. You know, if their child gets overwhelmed or too hot or things like that."
The room is staffed with occupational therapists during every game, providing specialized assistance for children navigating sensory challenges. Thanks to community partnerships, therapists and equipment are available to families at no charge.
