FGCU host Hendry-Glades students to give them a glimpse into future careers

Students from Hendry and Glades counties had the opportunity to explore Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) during an event called Hendry-Glades Day on Monday. The visit offered 250 high school juniors a firsthand experience of the various career paths available through higher education.

It gave students a chance to engage in hands-on activities related to different fields like nursing, culinary, hospitality, digital arts, education and engineering, all offered at FGCU.

"So far I like it," said Kamari, a junior at Clewiston High School.

Amanda Lehrian, the Hendry-Glades Regional Coordinator for FGCU, highlighted the importance of the event.

"It really is a time for students from rural counties who are a little bit insulated from different professions and industries," said Lehrian. "They don't always get to see every single option, or career in front of them in those counties."

She explained that the event helps students understand how an area of study correlates with a career, ensuring they are passionate about their choices before making it when they're seniors.

This marks the third year FGCU has hosted the event, and it has already shown positive results. Lehrian said they've had more students from Hendry and Glades counties enroll at the university.

"We had a roughly 17% increase over the last couple of years," said Lehrian.

Kamari shared his thoughts on the experience and Fon GCU.

"I like it, it's pretty big," he said. "I got to think about it, see my options."

Lehrian expressed FGCU's commitment to supporting these students.

"They're going to walk away knowing that they're valued," she said. "We want them here in the nest, and in general, we support their pathway wherever it takes them. But we would love to be their school of choice."
