COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.—Students at Pelican Marsh Elementary in Collier County are showing the power of kindness and community support.
The students learned firsthand how their efforts can make a difference for those in need, as they participated in a fundraising initiative to provide meals for those who might not have enough to eat.
As students arrived in the drop-off line, the day felt different. It was a day of celebration and achievement.
Cheers filled the school cafeteria as students discovered they had raised $6,100, surpassing last year's goal by $2,000.
“I think there are a lot of kiddos out there that were not getting 3 meals a day, and we might not know about it. And so it truly goes right back into our community, and that’s the best part,” said Dr. Rebecca Merhar, Principal of Pelican Marsh.
The kindness board at the school served as a visual reminder of their progress, with each footprint added representing 200 meals.
“It just really is so heartwarming to see the kids get so excited about this...the thing that you do is so amazing, and for PME to be a part of it, it just feels so special,” said Lindsey Gualdoni, PTO president.
Fifth-grader Nicolas, who was the first to donate, shared that his past experiences motivated him to give back.
“I have been in this situation in my past. When I first came to the U.S. at 5. It’s a wonderful thing, I love donating, I love helping out the community, and I love how you do the same thing too,” said Nicolas.
Another student, Nash, demonstrated his commitment by collecting funds from his neighborhood and family, ultimately raising $800.
“So, I went around my neighborhood asking my neighbors and family friends for money, and I ended up with $360, and then my uncle said he’d match that—so I ended up with $720, and then my mom added $80 to make a firm $800,” said Nash.
Elle, a fellow student, expressed the hope she feels for those who will benefit from their efforts.
“Makes me feel very hopeful, because people who don’t have enough money maybe to feed their families, may not have to worry about their next meal,” said Elle.
The students' determination and generosity highlight the impact that even the youngest members of the community can have on others' lives.
