Tea, tiers, and timeless charm: Inside Wisteria Tea Room & Café in Fort Myers

FORT MYERS, Fla.--You have had tea before. But not like this.

At Wisteria Tea Room & Cafe, tea is not a quick drink on the way to something else. It is the event. It is the outfit. It is the moment you slow down, trade your phone for a teacup, and feel like you have stepped into another time.

Tucked inside a cozy, house-like space in downtown Fort Myers, Wisteria serves traditional English-style afternoon tea with more than 30 blends to choose from. This is the kind of place where fascinators make sense, floral dresses feel required, and mismatched china tells stories of its own.

Many of the teacups and plates on display were donated by community members, turning the dining room into a living collection of memories from around the world, with pieces from England, Italy, and Japan.

For co-owner Joy Schwartz, the tea room was always meant to feel personal.

“I created this place to feel like a home. I want people to feel welcomed here,” Schwartz said. “Someone once felt so welcomed they sent me a letter in the mail to tell us.”

The tea service is as elegant as it is generous. Guests are served endless pots of tea alongside a three-tiered tray stacked with fresh, house-made treats. Savory finger sandwiches sit on the bottom tier, warm scones with cream and jam in the middle, and delicate pastries on top. Everything is prepared in-house, turning afternoon tea into a full sensory experience rather than just a meal.

Wisteria opened 15 years ago, founded by Schwartz’s mother-in-law, who fell in love with tea rooms for the way they bring people together.

“My mother-in-law loved tea rooms because of the people and hanging out,” Schwartz said.

About six years ago, Schwartz purchased the business and committed herself to preserving that legacy. The result is a space that feels intentionally slow. Tea here is meant to be poured, smelled, tasted, and talked over.

When it comes to flavors, there is something for every kind of tea drinker. Popular blends include Ginger Peach Darjeeling, while more whimsical options catch the eye with their colors alone, like Lavender Butterfly Kisses, a soft purple tea that looks as magical as it tastes.

Some blends are mixed in-house, while others are imported from Germany, adding an international touch to each cup.

Schwartz believes tea does something coffee cannot.

“Some people have coffee, but that’s quick,” she said. “Tea is more of a tradition. It bridges that generational gap. Everyone can enjoy it because we have so many different kinds of tea.”

That sense of tradition shows up not only in the menu but in the way guests connect to the space. Visitors have left handwritten cards behind. Some families have even donated their own China to be displayed and used, adding to the room’s story with every new piece.

Beyond daily tea service, Wisteria also hosts themed events throughout the year, from Mother’s Day teas to special character experiences like Tea with Princess Belle. Each event keeps the spirit playful while staying rooted in the ritual of tea.

Walking into Wisteria feels like stepping into someone’s living room, where time moves slower and conversation matters more. It is the kind of place that makes you sit up straighter, lift your cup with intention, and realize you are not just drinking tea.
