If you have visited Fort Myers Beach lately and suddenly hit a construction gate and 20-foot sand piles, you are not alone in wondering what is going on.
Crescent Beach Family Park, torn apart by Hurricane Ian, is now in the middle of a $1.3 million rebuild. From the outside, though, some visitors say it does not exactly scream “progress.” What they see are bulldozers, heavy machinery and what looks like sand being pushed into bigger and bigger mounds just a couple hundred feet from the water.
“Since I’ve been here? No,” said Michelle Imoersteg, visiting for a month from Ohio, when asked if it looks like much has changed. “If it were Margaritaville, it would be done.”
The park has been closed during construction, which is unfolding in the middle of peak tourist season. Just beyond the fence line, crews are moving dirt as part of what Lee County calls "site work," including underground stormwater improvements and sand preparation to make sure conditions are beach-ready before the visible amenities go in.
The county says once it’s complete, the park is expected to include shaded structures, picnic areas, landscaped walkways, new beach access points and a modular restroom facility. And for many beachgoers, those restrooms cannot come soon enough.
"This whole area needs bathrooms badly down here for people to just come up for the day," said Garth Bromley, visiting from Canada. "The ones down there at Bowditch aren't open yet either. So, it kind of impedes the amount of time people want to spend down here."
Right now, visitors who need facilities have to walk to nearby Lynn Hall Memorial Park — farther than some would like, especially in the Florida heat.
Lee County says construction began Jan. 19 and the project is about 25% complete, with no delays so far. In a statement to Gulf Coast News, the county said, "Current contractual substantial completion is set for June 19, 2026, and final completion at July 20."
Until then, the view at Crescent Beach Family Park is less fit for a postcard and more like a project site.
According to the county's website, construction at Lynn Hall Memorial Park was anticipated to begin in February 2026, pending permit approvals, with estimated completion in early summer 2027, weather permitting.
Gulf Coast News has reached out to the county to see if that is still an accurate expectation and is waiting for a response.
